Florence offers many historical squares, plenty of the squares are masterpieces of their own and our considered open-air museums, places where people can meet each other, visit small antiques markets, buy typical products and also close business agreements.
You can start by visiting Piazza del Duomo, it has always been the spiritual centre of Florence. Passing by the Cathedral of “Santa Maria del Fiore”, it’s impossible not to lift your eyes and admire the imposing Gothic Façade in all its majesty and the Brunelleschi’s Dome visible from every part of Florence.
Continuing towards Piazza della Signoria dominated by “Palazzo Vecchio”, literally the "Old Palace", still fulfils its original role as Florence's town hall where it is possible to see many important sculptures like a copy of David, a masterpiece of Michelangelo: one of the major artist of Italy. The bronze statue of Perseo holding Medusa's head, by Cellini, and the fountain of Neptune dell’Ammannati.
If you’re tired you can rest a moment on the stone steps in front of the Uffizi Gallery and observe the street artist’s shows.
Pass the square and go towards Santa Croce. Here you can stop for a coffee or a sandwich in one of the many bars in the area.
Piazza Santa Croce is a rectangular and enormous square: highlighted by the white facades of the Church and the statue of Dante. In the center of the square in June takes place the famous historical Florentine football match. After seeing the works inside the church of Santa Croce, continue towards the Arno river.
Passing the river you’ll arrive in Piazza Pitti, the old residence of the Medici. You can take a break by sitting on the square or visit the Boboli garden that surrounds the ancient Grand Ducal residence.
After this stopover, you arrive to Piazza Santo Spirito, lively square on the opposite banks of the Arno. The unusual facade of the church designed by Brunelleschi makes it an unusual background for this picturesque square, full of life: with many shops, clubs, restaurants, where to eat and drink without spending too much money!
