This is the ancient refectory of the former Benedictine monastery that occupies the block between Via S. Gallo and Via XXVII Aprile. Andrea del Castagno decorated the room with exquisite frescoes, after 1444: of particular note on the far wall is the Last Supper with scenes of the Resurrection, the Crucifixion and the Deposition, all of them unified in perspective.
Other works by the same master include Cristo in pieta, with preparatory drawing, which was painted for the monastery and the Christ Crucified, with Mourners, St. Benedict and St. Romualdo, originally taken from the cloister of the former convent of S. Maria degli Angioli.
