Art Itinerary - Churches in Florence

Italy is the country of 1000 churches and Florence has many beautiful ones! The historic centre of Florence is so small that you can see them all walking by foot. Here is a possible one day route to admire all the Gothic and Renaissance Florentine masterpieces.

Morning

Starting from the station of Florence, the first church that you meet is right in front of you, it’s Santa Maria Novella, whose Renaissance facade made by Leon Battista Alberti has just been restored. Inside: The trinity of Masaccio, Brunelleschi and Giotto’s crucifix and Filippino Lippi’s windows. Once going out from the square, take one of the alleys leading to San Lorenzo and have a break drinking a cappuccino in one of the many small bars that you find along the streets.

In San Lorenzo church square is also the market which sells local products in leather, where you can buy clothes Made in Italy. San Lorenzo is one of the oldest churches in Florence, but remained without facade (it was to be done by Michelangelo): contains the two pulpits, masterpieces of Donatello and also the Medici tombs.

Afternoon

After a good sandwich maybe bought inside the Central Market or a plate of pasta in one of the local inns around there, in just a 5 minutes walk, you’ll arrive to Duomo di Firenze, the 4th largest church in Europe. If you have enough energy, climb up Brunelleschi’s Dome or Giotto's Bell Tower to admire an unforgettable landscape. Otherwise you can always take some photos of the beautiful facade and the "gates of paradise" on the Baptistery.

Continue along Via Calzaiuoli (a good shopping road!) up to Piazza della Signoria. From here, through one of the many narrow alleys behind Palazzo Vecchio, you can reach Piazza Santa Croce. If you are hungry you can stop for an ice cream at Vivoli, historical ice-cream shop in Florence. The Church of the Santa Croce contains the tombs of Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli also Cimabue crucifix and Giotto’s frescoes.

Evening

Admire the facade that changes color with the sunset and take a walk around the nearby leather shops, you're ready for a delicious dinner. The square and surrounded streets are full of excellent restaurants and pizzerias. Take a rest by eating the best “ribollita” of Florence!
